Removing "Learn about this Picture" Icon from the Desktop

Windows has introduced a feature called Windows Spotlight, which adds an icon to your desktop titled "Learn about this picture." If you enjoy the variety of daily background images but prefer to avoid desktop clutter, there is a solution available.

This simple fix requires a registry entry.


  1. Open Notepad


  2. Type or copy and paste the following lines:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]

"{2cc5ca98-6485-489a-920e-b3e88a6ccce3}"=dword:00000001


  1. Save the file as a whateveryouwant.reg

  2. Navigate to the saved location and double click the file you just created.

  3. When prompted, click/tap on Run, yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the change.

  4. Right click on your desktop and click/tap on Refresh (F5) your desktop to apply.
