Windows 10 Not Activated After Upgrading? What Still Works

I used to get this call a lot: someone upgraded an old Windows 7 computer to Windows 10, and now Windows keeps saying it isn't activated. The key on the sticker doesn't work anymore, and there's a watermark in the corner of the screen.


You'll find tools online that claim to activate Windows for free. They aren't licensed by Microsoft, antivirus often flags them for good reason, and I wouldn't run one on a client's computer. Below are the legitimate ways to get Windows activated.



Why Your Old Key Stopped Working


For years, Windows 7 and 8 product keys could still activate Windows 10 and 11, long after the official free upgrade offer ended. In September 2023, Microsoft closed that door. Windows 7 and 8 keys no longer activate Windows 10 or 11.



Step 1: Check Your Activation Status


  • Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation

  • Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Activation


If it says Windows is activated with a digital license, you're all set. If not, keep going.



Step 2: Run the Activation Troubleshooter


If this computer was activated before and you've reinstalled Windows or replaced a part like the motherboard, the troubleshooter can often reactivate it.


  1. On the Activation page, click Troubleshoot.

  2. If you changed hardware, choose I changed hardware on this device recently and sign in with the Microsoft account the license was linked to.

  3. Pick this computer from the list and activate.



Step 3: Look for a Key Built Into the Computer


Most computers that came with Windows 8 or newer have a product key stored in the firmware. Windows picks it up automatically, as long as you install the same edition (Home or Pro) the computer came with. To see it, open PowerShell as administrator and run:


(Get-CimInstance -Query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey

If a key shows up, enter it on the Activation page under Change product key.



Step 4: Buy a Genuine License


If none of that works, you'll need a license. Buy it from the Microsoft Store (there's a link on the Activation page) or an authorized retailer.


A word of warning: those $10 keys on auction and marketplace sites are usually resold volume or grey-market keys. They may work for a while and then get deactivated. It's not worth the risk.



Should You Still Activate Windows 10?


Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Home users can still get security updates through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program until October 12, 2027. It's free if you sync your PC settings with Windows Backup, or you can use 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or pay $30.


If your computer meets the Windows 11 requirements, an activated Windows 10 license upgrades to Windows 11 for free. If it's too old for Windows 11, it may be time to replace it, or give it a new life with Zorin OS.



What Happens If You Don't Activate?


Windows still works and still gets security updates, but you'll see a watermark on the screen and reminders to activate, and you can't change personalization settings like your wallpaper or colors.
