Using Free AI Tools to Prepare Your VA Claim: A Veteran's Take

As a veteran, I know how overwhelming a VA claim can feel. There are medical records to dig through, forms with confusing language, and evidence requirements that aren't always clear. It's easy to put it off, or to file something incomplete and wait months for a denial.
Free AI tools won't file your claim for you, but they can make the preparation a lot less painful. Here's how I think about using them, and where to be careful.
Where AI Can Help
Organizing your personal statement: if you have a lot to say but don't know how to structure it, AI can help you turn your notes into a clear, organized statement. The details and the experiences must be yours.
Making sense of medical records: you can ask it to explain medical terms, or summarize long visit notes so you can find the entries that matter for your claim.
Building a checklist: ask what evidence is usually needed for a condition like sleep apnea, PTSD or a back injury, then check that against what you have.
Cleaning up your writing: fix grammar, tighten long paragraphs and make sure your statement is easy for a rater to read.
Free Tools to Try
Microsoft Copilot: good for drafting and editing, and for talking through what you're trying to say.
Google Gemini: good for summarizing long documents and explaining things in plain language.
Both have free versions, so there's no need to pay anyone just to get your thoughts on paper.
Be Careful With These
Protect your personal information: remove your Social Security number, VA file number and other identifying details before you paste anything into an AI tool.
Check every fact: AI can sound confident and still be wrong. It can get regulations, rating criteria or medical details wrong, so verify anything important on VA.gov or with a representative.
Keep it truthful and in your own words: your statement has to reflect what actually happened to you. Buddy statements must come from your buddy, in their words. Don't have AI write them.
Don't Skip Free Human Help
AI is a helper, not a representative. Accredited Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), like the DAV, VFW and American Legion, help veterans file claims at no cost. Use AI to get organized, then have a VSO representative look over your claim before you submit it.
Common forms you'll run into include VA Form 21-4138 (Statement in Support of Claim) and VA Form 21-10210 (Lay/Witness Statement). You can find both on VA.gov.
My Take
Used the right way, AI takes a lot of the stress out of preparing a claim. It helps you get organized, understand your records and say what you mean clearly. Just keep your information safe, double-check what it tells you, and lean on a VSO for the final review. You've earned these benefits, and it's worth taking the time to file a strong claim.
